How do I fix a #SPILL! error in Excel?

SHORT ANSWER

Press Insert, type your question, and Mini NOVA guides you through the error on your screen while you make the click: no server or browser extension to set up, and no Microsoft 365 plan needed. #SPILL! means the formula wants to fill several cells and something is already in the way, or the result would run off the sheet.

Ask Mini NOVA, then clear the spill

Select the cell that shows #SPILL! so the dashed border is on screen. Microsoft Support uses that border to show where the formula wanted to put its results.

  1. Leave the error on screen. Keep the message, the formula bar, or the settings page in view. Mini NOVA captures the screen when you submit the question, so scroll until the error and a little of the window around it are visible.
  2. Press Insert and type your question. Press Insert, then type what you want to know. Mini NOVA sees that screen and guides you step by step. You make the click. There is no server or browser extension to set up, and no Microsoft 365 plan is needed.
  3. Change one thing, then look again. You make the change. If the error is still there, ask a follow-up with the new screen visible. Mini NOVA remembers the conversation context. There is no chat history list.
  4. Select the cells that are in the way. Select the cell with #SPILL!. A dashed border shows the intended spill range, and an error-checking alert appears. Choose Select Obstructing Cells. Delete or move whatever is in those cells. When the blockage is gone, the formula spills, or a PivotTable expands, into that range.
  5. Unmerge cells inside the border. A spilled formula cannot land on merged cells. Unmerge them, or move the formula to a range that does not cross a merge. Select Obstructing Cells finds the merged cells as well.
  6. Move the formula out of a table. Spilled array formulas are not supported inside a table. Move the formula out of the table, or select the table and use Table Design, then Tools, then Convert to range.
  7. Shrink a lookup that covers a whole column. A formula such as =VLOOKUP(A:A,A:C,2,FALSE) tries to look up every row and spill more than a million results, which runs off the sheet. Microsoft Support gives three replacements: look up only the rows you need, such as A2:A7; look up the single cell on that row, such as A2, and copy the formula down; or use the @ operator, as in =VLOOKUP(@A:A,A:C,2,FALSE), and copy down. The single-cell and @ forms work in a table. The whole-block form does not.

Nearby formula errors

#N/A is a lookup that found nothing. #REF! is a reference that no longer exists. #VALUE! is a value of the wrong kind. The spreadsheet guide is the place to start when the code on the sheet is none of these.

FAQ

How do I fix a #SPILL! error in Excel?

Select the cell so the dashed border shows, then use Select Obstructing Cells and clear or move what is blocking the range. Also check for merged cells and for a formula that sits inside a table.

Why does a whole-column VLOOKUP show #SPILL! in Excel?

Passing a whole column as the lookup value makes the formula try to return a result for every row. Limit the lookup to the rows you need, look up one cell and copy down, or use @.
