Ask Mini NOVA, then find the bad value
Microsoft Support calls #VALUE! a general error: the formula's typing is wrong, or a referenced cell is. The checks below are the ones on that page.
- Leave the error on screen. Keep the message, the formula bar, or the settings page in view. Mini NOVA captures the screen when you submit the question, so scroll until the error and a little of the window around it are visible.
- Press Insert and type your question. Press Insert, then type what you want to know. Mini NOVA sees that screen and guides you step by step. You make the click. There is no server or browser extension to set up, and no Microsoft 365 plan is needed.
- Change one thing, then look again. You make the change. If the error is still there, ask a follow-up with the new screen visible. Mini NOVA remembers the conversation context. There is no chat history list.
- Step through the formula. Select the cell, then on the Formulas tab choose Evaluate Formula and press Evaluate. Each press calculates one piece. Stop on the piece that turns into #VALUE!. That is the argument to fix. A cell that looks blank can still hold a space, and Evaluate Formula is where that space shows up.
- Find text where a number is expected. Text or a special character in a referenced cell can cause #VALUE!. ISTEXT on those cells reports TRUE where the cell holds text. ISTEXT does not fix the cell. It only finds candidates. Then retype the number, or change the cell so it is a real number rather than digits stored as text.
- Use a function instead of + or *. A formula that adds or multiplies with + or * can fail when one cell contains text. Microsoft Support says to use a function instead. SUM ignores text in a range where =A1+A2 does not. The same idea applies to PRODUCT in place of *.
- Remove spaces that only look blank. Select the cells the formula uses. If a cell contains only a space, delete it. Hidden spaces are a common reason a cell looks empty and still breaks the formula.
- Add IFERROR only after the formula works. IFERROR can replace #VALUE! with text, 0, or a blank. Microsoft Support says to add that wrapper after you know the formula is right. If you add it first, it hides the problem and you cannot tell whether the formula works.
Do not mix it up with the other codes
#N/A means a lookup found nothing. #REF! means a reference was deleted. #SPILL! means the results are blocked. The spreadsheet guide is for the sheet already on your screen.

FAQ
What does #VALUE! mean in an Excel formula?
Microsoft Support describes it as a problem with how the formula is typed, or with the cells it references. Text in a numeric calculation, and cells that contain spaces, are common causes.
Why does #VALUE! show up in Excel VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP?
The lookup can pass a value of the wrong kind into the rest of the formula, or the formula around it can be typed incorrectly. Evaluate Formula shows which argument fails. A lookup that simply finds nothing is #N/A, which has its own checks.
Does Mini NOVA change the formula that shows #VALUE!?
No. It tells you what to check on the screen you have open. You edit the cell.
Does Mini NOVA click or type for me?
No. It guides you step by step, and you make the click. It never acts on its own.
