Ask Mini NOVA, then check the lookup
Start with the sheet open. The checks below are the ones Microsoft Support lists for a #N/A error from VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, LOOKUP, or MATCH.
- Leave the error on screen. Keep the message, the formula bar, or the settings page in view. Mini NOVA captures the screen when you submit the question, so scroll until the error and a little of the window around it are visible.
- Press Insert and type your question. Press Insert, then type what you want to know. Mini NOVA sees that screen and guides you step by step. You make the click. There is no server or browser extension to set up, and no Microsoft 365 plan is needed.
- Change one thing, then look again. You make the change. If the error is still there, ask a follow-up with the new screen visible. Mini NOVA remembers the conversation context. There is no chat history list.
- Confirm the value is inside the range. Read the range in the formula and compare it with the cells where you can see the value. Microsoft Support says the usual cause is that the lookup value is not in the source data the formula searches. If the range has moved, or it starts to the right of the column that holds the value, the function is not looking at the cell you think it is.
- Ask for an exact match. For VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, set the range_lookup argument to FALSE. TRUE, or leaving that argument out, asks for an approximate match and can return #N/A or the wrong row. For MATCH, an exact match is match_type 0.
- Remove extra spaces. A value that looks the same can still fail when a cell has a leading or trailing space. Microsoft Support shows TRIM around the lookup table, for example =VLOOKUP(D2,TRIM(A2:B7),2,FALSE). In current Microsoft 365 you can enter that and press Enter. In older versions you may need Ctrl+Shift+Enter. You can also delete the extra spaces in the cells themselves.
- Make the types match. A number in one cell and the same digits stored as text in another are not a match. Select the cells, right-click, choose Format Cells, then Number, or press Ctrl+1. To push a format through a whole column, apply the format, then on the Data tab choose Text to Columns and Finish.
- Hide #N/A only after the lookup is right. IFERROR can show 0, a blank, or your own text when the lookup fails, for example =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(...),"Not in the table"). Use that when a missing value is expected. It will also hide a range, space, or type problem you have not fixed yet.
Same screen, other formula errors
If the cell says #REF!, the formula points at a cell that is no longer valid. #SPILL! means the result needs empty cells. #VALUE! means a value is the wrong kind for the formula. The spreadsheet guide covers asking about the sheet you already have open.

FAQ
Why does VLOOKUP return #N/A when I can see the value in Excel?
The function did not find an exact match in the cells it searches. Check that the range still covers that value, that range_lookup is FALSE, and that spaces or text-versus-number differences are not hiding the match.
Does XLOOKUP show #N/A for the same reason in Excel?
Microsoft Support lists XLOOKUP with VLOOKUP as a function that returns #N/A when the lookup value is not in the source data. The same space and data-type checks apply. XLOOKUP does not use VLOOKUP's TRUE or FALSE argument.
Will Mini NOVA rewrite my VLOOKUP?
No. It explains the formula and the error it can see, and you type any change into the sheet.
Does Mini NOVA click or type for me?
No. It guides you step by step, and you make the click. It never acts on its own.
How do I open Mini NOVA?
Press Insert, then type your question about what is on your screen.
