AI receptionists in New Zealand
What an AI receptionist does, what it costs in NZ dollars, and what to check before you choose one.
What an AI receptionist actually does
It picks up when you’re on a job, with a customer or after hours, and has a real conversation: it listens, answers and asks questions, instead of playing a menu. A good one does five things:
- Answers questions about your services, prices, hours and area, from facts you’ve approved.
- Takes details: name, number, what they need and how urgent it is.
- Books times into the slots you’re really free.
- Puts urgent calls through to you, and takes a message for the rest.
- Tells you what happened: a transcript, a short summary and the next step.
What it costs in New Zealand
Most AI receptionists charge a monthly fee plus call minutes. One New Zealand provider, for example, publishes plans from about NZ$130 a month plus talk time at around NZ$0.80 a minute1. Ora starts at NZ$149 a month plus GST with 100 call minutes included, and NZ$349 for 400 minutes. Compare the cost of a missed job, not just the monthly price: one booked job a month often covers it.
| Option | Typical cost | Answers after hours |
|---|---|---|
| Part-time receptionist | At least NZ$23.95 an hour, plus holiday pay and KiwiSaver | No |
| Answering service | Per minute or per call, often US$0.75 to US$1.50 a minute for live operators | Usually |
| AI receptionist | About NZ$130 to NZ$350 a month for a small business, plus usage | Yes |
Questions to ask before you choose
- Does it say it’s an AI? Callers trust you more when it’s honest, and it avoids misleading anyone.
- Where do its answers come from? It should only say what you’ve approved, and say “I’m not sure” for the rest.
- Does it sound like a person on the phone? Listen to a real call. A gap of more than a second or two before it answers makes callers talk over it.
- What happens after the call? You want a transcript, a summary and the caller as a lead with a follow-up task, not just an email.
- Is it priced in NZ dollars, and what happens at the limit?
Can it make calls too?
Some can. Ora answers your phone and also works through call lists you approve, for sales or for following up quotes. Outbound calls follow strict rules: New Zealand business numbers only, a named person approves each number, calling hours, a daily limit, and a do-not-call list. Read cold calling rules in New Zealand for the detail.
Will callers mind talking to an AI?
Some will, and they should be able to say so. A good AI receptionist says it’s an AI early, keeps it short, and offers a person when someone would rather. Most callers care more that someone picked up. We explain how we handle it in should an AI caller say it’s an AI?
