Does your chat AI learn from your chats?

What training on your chats means, how to check, and what to keep out of any chat AI.

Bjorn Kim, founder of NOVA · 28 October 2026 · 5 min read
The short answerSome chat AI services can use your conversations to train future versions of their models, depending on your plan and settings. Check the service’s data or privacy settings and its terms, turn training off if you can, and never paste in passwords, card numbers or other people’s personal details, whatever the setting says.

What “training on your chats” means

Chat AI models are improved by training them on more examples. Some providers use customer conversations as part of that, sometimes after review by people. Your words don’t usually come back word for word, but once text is used for training you can’t easily take it back. For a business, that is the part that matters.

How to check your chat AI

  1. Find the data controls. Look in the app’s settings for privacy, data or model improvement options.
  2. Read the plan details. Business and team plans often handle data differently from free personal plans. Check which one your staff actually use.
  3. Check how long chats are kept, and whether people at the provider can review them.
  4. Check where data is processed. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you stay responsible for personal information you send overseas.
  5. Write it down. Put the approved tools and settings in your AI policy.

Never paste these into any chat AI

  • Passwords, API keys and bank or card numbers.
  • Customers’ or staff members’ personal details you don’t need for the task.
  • Health information or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement.
  • Unreleased financials or commercially sensitive plans, unless your plan’s terms cover them.

How NOVA handles it

NOVA’s rule is to ask first. Ankaa, the chat AI we’re building, won’t use your chats to train anything unless you choose to share them, and it runs on NOVA’s own servers. Gnomon never stores the texts it checks. JENA never sends, posts or pays without your OK. Ankaa isn’t ready yet; you can join the waitlist.

Questions

Does ChatGPT or Claude train on my chats?

It depends on the provider, your plan and your settings, and policies change. Check the app’s data controls and the plan’s terms, and turn training off if you can.

How do I stop a chat AI training on my conversations?

Look in the app’s privacy or data settings for a model improvement or training option and turn it off. Business plans often have different defaults from free plans.

Is it safe to paste customer details into a chat AI?

Only if you need to and your approved tool’s terms allow it. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you remain responsible for that information. Leave out details the task doesn’t need.

Will Ankaa train on my chats?

No, not unless you choose to share them. Ankaa is NOVA’s chat AI, run on NOVA’s own servers. It isn’t released yet.
