AI and macrons: keep Māori words right

Why AI tools sometimes drop the macron from Taupō or Māori, why it matters, and how to check before you publish.

The short answerA macron (the line over a vowel, as in ā) marks a long vowel in te reo Māori, and it can change a word’s meaning. AI rewrites and copy-paste between apps can drop it. Type macrons with the Māori keyboard in Windows, and check any AI-edited text for missing macrons before it goes out.

Why macrons matter

In te reo Māori a macron marks a long vowel. Leave it off and you can change the word: keke and kēkē are different words. Many official place names carry macrons too, such as Taupō, Whangārei and Ōtautahi Christchurch. Getting them right is a matter of accuracy and respect, and New Zealand readers notice.

How macrons go missing

  • An AI rewrite. When an AI rewords your text, it can return a word without its macron, especially in a long document.
  • Copy and paste. Some older systems and fonts don’t keep the character.
  • Spellcheckers. A checker set to a different English can “correct” a word to the spelling without the macron.
  • Search and URLs. Web addresses often drop macrons, and the plain spelling can leak back into the copy.

How to type macrons on Windows

Add the Māori keyboard in Settings > Time & language > Language & region: add a language, choose Māori, and include its keyboard. Switch to it with Windows key + Space. Then press the tilde key (~), just left of 1, followed by a vowel to type ā, ē, ī, ō or ū. Stuck finding the setting? Mini NOVA can point to it on your screen.

How to check AI-edited text

  1. Keep the original text you gave the AI.
  2. Search the new version for the Māori words and place names in the original.
  3. Compare every one, letter by letter, along with numbers, prices and dates.

If you check AI rewrites in your own software, Gnomon does this for you. It compares the original with the AI’s version and flags each change it finds, including a dropped macron, a changed price or a moved date. It runs the same way every time, and texts are never stored. A free test key gives you 100 checks a day.
