How to make your writing sound natural
Seven fixes for writing that sounds stiff, robotic or like a form letter.
1. Cut stock phrases
Phrases like "it is important to note that", "in today's world" and "it goes without saying" add words and remove meaning.

- After: The deadline has moved.
2. Drop filler openers
"Furthermore", "Additionally" and "Moreover" at the start of every sentence make writing sound like a report. Most sentences don't need a connector at all.
3. Mix sentence lengths
When every sentence is the same length, writing drones. Follow a long sentence with a short one. Like this.
4. Use contractions
"We're", "it's" and "don't" sound like a person. "We are", "it is" and "do not" in every line sound like a contract.
5. Be specific
- Before: We are committed to delivering a seamless experience.
- After: Your order ships within two days.
6. Hedge less
One "might" is honest. Five in a paragraph sound unsure. Say what you know, and flag only what you don't.
7. Read it out loud
Your ear catches what your eye skips. If a sentence is hard to say, it is hard to read.
