The short answerFind the one point the sentence makes, put who does what at the start, cut the filler, split it if it carries two ideas, and swap vague words for specific ones. Most clear sentences are under 20 words.

Step 1: Find the point

Ask what the reader must take away. Write that down in a few words before you touch the sentence.

Step 2: Lead with who does what

  • Before: A decision was made by the team to delay the launch.
  • After: The team delayed the launch.

Step 3: Cut the filler

  • Before: We are going to be trying to get all of the final changes done before the end of the month, if that is at all possible.
  • After: We aim to finish the final changes by the end of the month.

Step 4: One idea per sentence

If a sentence has "and" joining two separate thoughts, split it in two. Two short sentences beat one long one.

Step 5: Choose specific words

  • Before: The update will be released soon.
  • After: The update comes out on Friday.
