Marketing agency or AI? What NZ businesses pay in 2027

Agency retainers often cost thousands a month. Here’s which of that work AI can draft for under NZ$30, and when an agency still earns its fee.

The short answerNew Zealand agencies commonly quote NZ$1,500 to NZ$7,000 a month plus GST for marketing retainers, before any ad spend. Much of the routine work in those retainers, such as social posts, blog drafts, newsletters and review replies, can now be drafted by AI for a fraction of that: JENA starts at NZ$29 a month including GST, and a general assistant such as Claude Pro is US$20 a month. Keep paying experts for strategy, big ad budgets and creative work you can’t judge yourself.

Your agency is probably using AI too

From Bjorn, NOVA’s founderBefore NOVA, I worked at two marketing agencies in New Zealand. Both used AI for the ideas, the strategy and building the work itself. So why would you pay that much for it?

Many agencies now draft with the same AI tools you can use yourself. In a Databox and Jasper survey of 255 marketing and advertising agencies, about 88% said they use generative AI for written content such as blogs4. In a small survey of agencies at the end of 2025, more than three-quarters planned to use AI in 20265.

That isn’t wrong in itself: a good agency uses AI to work faster and spends the saved time on strategy. But if most of what you receive each month is AI-drafted posts and blogs, you’re paying agency rates for work an AI tool can draft for you directly. Ask your agency two questions:

  • How much of my monthly content is drafted by AI?
  • What do you add on top: strategy, testing, design, results?

If the answer to the second question is “not much”, that’s the part of the fee you can stop paying.

What AI can now do for under NZ$30 a month

  • Social posts for Facebook and Instagram, written from your own photos and jobs.
  • Blog posts and web pages that answer your customers’ questions.
  • Email newsletters and offers.
  • Replies to reviews and enquiries.
  • Simple designs: post images, flyers and ads from your brand kit.

The catch is that someone still has to check it. AI can get a price, a date or a claim wrong, and Fair Trading Act rules apply to your ads whoever writes them.

Two ways to do it

A general AI assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT. You ask, it drafts, you copy, check and post. Claude Pro is US$20 a month, or US$17 a month on a yearly plan3. Good if you have the time to brief it each time.

AI employees, such as JENA. You give a Marketing Manager, Content Writer or Social Media Manager a role and your business details once. It drafts the week’s posts and pages and asks for your approval before anything is sent or posted on your behalf. NZ$29, NZ$99 or NZ$299 a month, GST included, with a 7-day free trial. Full disclosure: NOVA makes JENA.

When an agency is still worth it

  • You spend thousands a month on ads and need someone managing and testing them daily.
  • You need a brand built from scratch, a video shoot or a website rebuild.
  • Nobody in the business has the time or interest to check and approve marketing each week.

Many small businesses do well with a mix: AI for the weekly routine, and an expert paid by the project for the big pieces.

How to decide

  1. List what your agency actually delivers each month: posts, pages, reports, ads.
  2. Price each item at the rates above.
  3. Try AI on the routine items for a month, with approvals on.
  4. Keep paying for the parts AI didn’t do well.
