How NOVA Ink handles your text

Much of NOVA Ink runs on your device. Text is sent only to give you a result you asked for, and our servers don't store it.

The short version

Spelling, the natural check, tone and Sheets formula checks run on your device. Text is sent only to give you a result you asked for, or the sentence you are typing while fix as you type is on. Our servers don't store your text, and it is never used to train AI models. NOVA Ink is always off on banking, checkout, tax, health and sign-in pages, and never reads password or payment fields.

  • On your device

Spelling, the natural check, tone, clarity hints and Sheets formula checks. Your settings, dictionary and paused sites are saved on your device too.

  • Sent only when needed

The sentence you are typing after you pause, or the text you highlight when you choose an action.

  • Always off

Banking, checkout, tax, health and sign-in pages, plus password, card and ID fields.

Your controls

  1. Pause on a site

Turn NOVA Ink off on any site from its menu, or pause it everywhere.

  2. Turn off fix as you type

Fix as you type is on by default. Turn it off any time from the NOVA Ink icon.

  3. Keep your own words

Add names and terms to your personal dictionary. It stays on your device.

  4. Remove it

Remove the extension from your browser at any time.

What NOVA Ink sends, and when

  • While fix as you type is on, the sentence you are typing, after you pause. Spelling is checked on your device and is never sent.
  • The text you highlight when you choose Rewrite, Summarize, Translate or Ask.
  • When you tap Draft reply in Gmail, the last 3 messages in the thread, with quoted history removed and email addresses masked, plus your About you line if you set one.
  • When you tap Find sources, a few search terms picked on your device. These go straight from your browser to Crossref and OpenAlex. Your text is not sent to them or to NOVA.

In Google Docs, nothing leaves your device until you accept a fix or pick an action. Only the site's hostname is sent with a request, never the full web address.

The permissions it asks for

  • Storage: your settings, sign-in, dictionary and paused sites, on your device. Never page text.
  • Side panel: opens the NOVA Ink panel next to the page.
  • Scripting: after an install or update, adds NOVA Ink's own packaged scripts to tabs that were already open. No remote code.
  • Clipboard write: lets Copy buttons copy a citation or result. NOVA Ink never reads your clipboard.
  • Identity: opens the NOVA sign-in page and receives a one-time code. No Google account data.
  • Access to all sites: so it can help in any text box you type in, except the sites where it is always off.

The full legal notice is the NOVA Ink privacy notice.
